False dilemma (false dichotomy)
A false dilemma is an argument that presents two options as if they were the only ones available, when in fact a third option, a combination, or a middle position exists. It is also called a false dichotomy, the either or fallacy, and the black and white fallacy, and all four names describe the same defect: the range of possibilities has been narrowed without justification.
What a false dilemma is
A false dilemma is an informal fallacy in which a premise asserts that a set of options is exhaustive, and that premise is false. What distinguishes it from its siblings among the logical fallacies is that the fault is in the menu rather than in the reasoning applied to it. Once you accept two options, everything that follows can be flawless: rule out one, and the other must be true. The structure is valid. The premise is not.
Two questions decide any case, and they are separate. Are the options exhaustive, meaning they cover every possibility? Are they exclusive, meaning you cannot have both? A false dilemma fails at least one. "Either we replace the roof or the building rots" fails exhaustiveness, because patching exists. "Either the machine is fast or it is accurate" fails exclusivity, because a machine can be both.
The shortest accurate definition, and the other names for it
The shortest accurate definition of the false dilemma logical fallacy is one clause: two doors are offered and there is a third. The tell is a sentence built on "either" and "or" that arrives without an argument for why the list stops there.
The names are worth sorting out, because searchers meet all of them. False dilemma and false dichotomy are used interchangeably; strictly, a dichotomy is a division into two, and a dilemma is a forced choice between two. Either or fallacy and black and white fallacy are plain English equivalents. A related but distinct name, the fallacy of the excluded middle, is confusing, because the law of excluded middle is a genuine principle of logic. That law says a statement is either true or its negation is true, which is fine. The fallacy occurs when the same rigid two way split is applied to options that are not a statement and its negation, such as two policies, two products, or two explanations.
The form it takes: three ways the menu gets shortened
Three moves produce almost every false dilemma, and spotting which one is in play tells you what to say next.
- Delete the middle. A continuous quantity is treated as a switch. "Either the office is fully staffed on Saturdays or it is closed" removes every staffing level between one person and everyone.
- Delete the combination. Two compatible options are presented as rivals. "We can either train the existing team or hire a specialist" ignores doing both, doing one then the other, or doing neither and outsourcing the task.
- Delete the unnamed option. The two named choices are real, and a third that nobody mentioned is left out. "Repair the machine or buy a new one" omits leasing, omits reducing the workload the machine carries, and omits changing the process so the machine is not needed.
Advertising relies on the first two, because a purchase decision is easiest when the alternative to buying is framed as an unacceptable state rather than as not buying. In media the same shape appears when a story is framed as two camps, which is a case of false equivalence layered on top of a false dilemma: the options are reduced to two, and then the two are treated as equally weighted.
A worked example, and the repair
Here is a worked example with the repair after it. A small company is deciding what to do about a delivery van that has failed inspection twice in 18 months. The manager says: "Either we spend 4,000 dollars on this van or we accept that we cannot make deliveries."
The repair is not to argue against either option. It is to write the menu out in full, which takes about two minutes and almost always changes the decision:
- Repair the van at the quoted price.
- Replace the van with a used vehicle, comparing total cost over 3 years rather than the price today.
- Lease a van and convert a capital cost into a monthly one.
- Contract the deliveries out and compare the per delivery cost against the running cost of owning.
- Reduce the delivery load by consolidating routes to 2 days a week, then rent as needed.
Five options is not the point; writing the list is the point. Note what the original framing achieved: by making the alternative to the 4,000 dollars a total loss of capability, it made 4,000 dollars sound cheap. That is what a false dilemma is for. It does not usually make you choose wrongly between two options, it makes you stop looking for a third.
What a false dilemma is confused with
A false dilemma is confused with 3 other fallacies that begin with the word false, and with 1 thing that is not a fallacy at all: a genuine either/or. They fail at different points in an argument.

A false dilemma is frequently propped up by an appeal to authority, since a menu of two is easier to accept when a confident expert presents it as the whole menu. All four are non sequiturs in structure: the conclusion does not follow from what has actually been established.
When narrowing to two options is not a fault
Narrowing to 2 options is not a fault when the 2 really are exhaustive, so the same move that produces a false dilemma can be honest framing. Calling a genuine dilemma false is the error in the opposite direction. 3 cases are legitimate.
- Use a true contradiction. "Either the shipment arrived before noon or it did not" is exhaustive by logic. A statement and its negation leave nothing out.
- Accept a binary imposed by the situation. If a form has a signature box and a deadline of five o'clock, you sign by five or you do not. The constraint is external, not rhetorical.
- Narrow deliberately, and say so. "There are other options, but given the budget we are choosing between these two" is honest framing. What makes a dilemma false is the hidden claim that the list is complete, not the shortness of the list.
The test to run on the next either or you are handed
Run this test whenever a choice arrives with exactly two options. Ask: what is the third option, and who benefits from my not seeing it?
Then run the two part check that settles it. First, exhaustiveness: can I describe a situation where neither of these is true? Second, exclusivity: can I describe a situation where both are true? If either question has an answer, the dilemma is false, and the useful next sentence is not "that is a fallacy" but "before we choose, let us list what else is on the table."
False cause and false analogy, the two nearest neighbors
Two of the fallacies in the table above are worth a closer look, because they are the ones most often mistaken for a false dilemma when the real problem is elsewhere in the argument.
False cause, sometimes given in Latin as post hoc ergo propter hoc, meaning after this therefore because of this, treats sequence as causation. A workshop repaints its storefront in March and takes more money in April, and the paint is credited. April may simply be a better month, or the repainting may have coincided with a new sign, longer hours or a neighboring shop reopening. The repair is to ask what else changed in the same window, and whether anyone recorded it.
False analogy reasons from a similarity that does not hold where it is being used. "Managing a warehouse is like organizing a cupboard, so the same shelving logic applies" is true about tidiness and false about load ratings, retrieval times and forklift aisles. The repair for a false analogy is one question: which specific feature of the first case is doing the work, and does the second case have it? An analogy is a good way to explain a conclusion and a poor way to establish one.
