The division logical fallacy is the mistake of assuming that what is true of a whole must also be true of each of its parts, and the composition fallacy is its mirror image: assuming that what is true of the parts must be true of the whole they make up. The 2 faults run in opposite directions, and telling which direction you are traveling is the first thing to get right.

What the fallacies of composition and division are

The fallacies of composition and division are 2 informal fallacies about the boundary between a thing and its parts. Composition runs parts to whole: every component of this sorting machine weighs under 2 kilograms, about 4.4 pounds, so the machine weighs under 2 kilograms. Division runs whole to parts: the company is 80 years old, so its staff are 80 years old. Both sentences move a property across the same boundary; they simply cross it from opposite sides.

What distinguishes this pair from its siblings among the logical fallacies is that neither is always an error. Most named fallacies are faults wherever they appear. These 2 are faults only for certain properties, which is why a page that just tells you to avoid them leaves you worse off than before. Aristotle listed composition and division among the 6 fallacies that depend on language in his Sophistical Refutations, alongside equivocation and ambiguity, though his versions turn on how the words of a sentence are grouped. The part and whole sense used today is the one this page describes.

The simple definition of each, and how to keep them straight

The simple definition of each is one clause, and the difference is the arrow.

  • Composition: what is true of the parts is assumed true of the whole. Parts, then whole. "Each musician in this ensemble is excellent, so the ensemble is excellent."
  • Division: what is true of the whole is assumed true of the parts. Whole, then parts. "This ensemble is excellent, so each musician in it is excellent."

A memory hook that survives contact with a real argument: composition composes, division divides. Composition builds a claim up out of the pieces, division breaks a claim down onto them. If you cannot tell which one you are looking at, find the subject of the conclusion. A conclusion about the machine, the company or the ensemble is composition. A conclusion about the bracket, the employee or the player is division.

The form each fallacy takes: 4 recurring patterns

The form each takes is a property crossing a boundary it cannot cross, and 4 patterns cover most real cases.

  • Composition on an additive property. Each bracket weighs 200 grams, about 7 ounces, so the frame of 40 brackets is light. Mass adds up, so the whole is heavier than any part, not the same.
  • Composition on a structural property. Every scene in the film is strong, so the film is strong. Order, pacing and fit are properties of the arrangement, and the parts can each be good while the arrangement is not.
  • Division on an aggregate figure. The delivery fleet averages 12 miles per gallon, so this van does 12. An average is a property of the set and can belong to none of its members.
  • Division on a group description. The department is efficient, so this clerk is efficient. Efficiency at the department level can survive a slow member, and it says nothing about which member is which.

Notice that all 4 are non sequiturs at the level of structure: the conclusion is not reached by the premise offered. What makes them worth their own names is that the missing premise is always the same one, and it is always about the property rather than about the argument.

A worked example of each, and the repair

A worked example of each makes the repair obvious. Take composition first. A workshop is quoting for a display stand and the manager says: "Every part on this list costs under 5 dollars, so the stand will be cheap."

Cost is additive. 60 parts at under 5 dollars each can total nearly 300 dollars before anyone is paid to assemble them. The repair is to name the property and ask how it behaves: does this property add up, or is it shared by every part alike? Cost adds. The conclusion needs a sum, not an inference.

Now division. A supplier's report says the warehouse pallets average 400 kilograms, roughly 880 pounds, and a planner concludes that the forklift can be rated for a 400 kilogram lift because that is what a pallet weighs. An average is a property of the set. If half the pallets are near 250 kilograms and half are near 550, the fleet average is met and the forklift fails on the heavier half. The repair is the same shape as before: ask what the figure is a property of. It is a property of the collection, so it does not descend to any member, and the planner needs the maximum, not the mean.

What composition and division are confused with

Composition and division are confused with 3 things in particular, and 1 question separates them from each: what exactly is the argument moving between?

Hasty generalization is the one most often mistaken for composition, and the distinction is worth stating twice: hasty generalization goes from some members to all members and stays at the level of members, while composition goes from parts to the object they compose, which is a change of subject rather than a change of scope. Three faulty bolts supporting a claim about the whole batch is hasty generalization. Three light bolts supporting a claim about the weight of the frame is composition.

The ecological fallacy is the statistical cousin of division. It occurs when a correlation measured across groups is read as a fact about the individuals inside them, and it is division applied to data rather than to a sentence. The straw man enters by a different door: when a group is spoken of as though it had 1 voice, an argument made by 1 member gets answered as the position of all of them, which is division and misrepresentation at the same time.

When the same move is not a fault: properties that really do transfer

The same move is not a fault when the property is the kind that transfers, and this is the whole page. The direction of the inference is not what makes it wrong. If every brick in a wall is red, the wall really is red, and that is composition working perfectly. If a solution has been mixed until it is uniform, any sample drawn from it has the same concentration as the barrel, and that is division working perfectly. Both inferences are sound because of what kind of property is involved.

Three kinds of property behave differently, and sorting a claim into 1 of them settles the question faster than any fallacy label.

  1. Uniform properties transfer both ways. Material, color of a homogeneous substance, concentration in a well mixed solution. Every part has it, the whole has it, and the inference runs safely in either direction.
  2. Additive properties do not transfer. Mass, cost, area, duration, headcount. The whole is the sum of the parts, so it necessarily differs from any single part, and both composition and division fail on them.
  3. Structural properties do not transfer. Stability, balance, whether the thing works, an average, being a team. These belong to the arrangement, so no part can carry them and the whole cannot hand them down.

This is why "avoid the composition fallacy" is bad advice on its own. Engineers and auditors reason from parts to wholes and back again all day, correctly, because they know which of the 3 kinds they are handling. The skill is not refusing the move, it is classifying the property first.

The test to run before you let a property cross the boundary

Run this test on any claim that travels between a thing and its pieces. Ask: is this the kind of property every part must share, or the kind only the assembly can have?

If you cannot answer that, run the substitute version, which needs no theory at all: can I describe a case where the premise is true and the conclusion is false? For "every part is light, so the machine is light", the case arrives immediately, because you can picture 400 light parts. For "every brick is red, so the wall is red", no such case exists, and that absence is your answer. The test costs one sentence and it decides both fallacies at once, in either direction.

Division and composition in ordinary claims, and how to avoid them

Ordinary claims in media, advertising and reporting carry these 2 faults more often than formal arguments do, usually because a figure about a group has been written as though it described a person or a product.

  • A per unit figure quoted as a total. "Each module uses very little power" in a system running 200 modules. Power is additive, so the sentence is true and the impression it leaves is false.
  • An average read as a typical case. "The average order ships in 2 days" tells you about the set of orders. It does not promise that yours is near the average, and it says nothing at all about the slowest tenth.
  • A reputation applied to a member. "That firm does excellent structural work, so the engineer they sent is excellent." Reputation is a property of an organization, built from many people over many years.

To avoid both fallacies in your own writing, do 1 thing: say what your number or adjective is a property of, in the same sentence. "The fleet averages 12 miles per gallon" cannot be misused as easily as "these vans do 12 miles per gallon", and the extra 2 words are the whole defense.
